Chocolate hails from Meso-America where cacoa beans were brewed to make a bitter drink or fermented into an alcoholic beverage.
Highly valued, cacao beans were used as currency. The Mayans and Aztecs believed cacao was divine, including it in rituals. Europeans sweetened the drink with honey or sugar and by the 17 th century it was a fashionable beverage enjoyed for nutritious, medicinal and aphrodisiac properties.
Dutch cocoa was born in 1828, when a Dutch chemist invented a way to make powdered chocolate. The first molded chocolate bar followed in 1847. Chocolate became valued in America and during wartime was included in soldiers’ rations.
Chocolate went to the moon with the Apollo astronauts.
